Discover The Water Lily Designs by Niloufer — handmade Lippan art, Indian folk art, and custom wall décor inspired by the traditions of Gujarat, India.
Niloufer literally translates to Waterlily, and I am the artist and founder of The Water Lily Designs, a creative studio dedicated to handmade Madhubani and modern Lippan wall décor. My journey into art began in India during my teacher training, where I was Introduced to the world of Indian Folk Art—a colorful, expressive, and accessible form of creativity that allowed children (and adults!) to paint freely, without the pressure of perfection. After moving to the United States in 2013, I embraced life as a stay-at-home mother. One morning, my three-year-old daughter looked at me and said, “I want to be like mummy—stay home, look after the kids, and paint.” Her innocent words inspired me to become a stronger role model, not only for her but for myself. When the world slowed down during the pandemic, I finally turned that dream into reality—and The Water Lily Designs was born.
My artistic style is deeply rooted in traditional Indian folk art, beginning with Madhubani painting and evolving into Lippan Kaam—a breathtaking clay and mirror mosaic technique from the Kutch region of Gujarat, India.
What is Lippan Art?
Lippan Art, also known as Lippan Kaam, is a centuries-old folk art form from Gujarat, traditionally created on the walls of village homes using clay, mirrors, and natural colors. These intricate designs capture the warmth, symmetry, and spirit of Indian craftsmanship.
At The Water Lily Designs, I bring this ancient art into modern homes by creating contemporary Lippan-inspired wall décor on wooden bases. Each handmade piece is carefully designed—starting with surface painting, layout planning, and then hand-moulding clay patterns. Every design is finished with cut mirrors that reflect light and add elegance to any space.
